Case Study
ABC
The American Broadcasting Company Owned and Operated Station Group engaged Grass Valley and SAMMA Systems to migrate their libraries of U-matic and BetaCam analog videotape cassettes to digital files.
The first installation of SAMMA products for the Group was at WPVI-TV, the ABC O&O station in Philadelphia. Several SAMMA robotic converters were installed by systems integrator and SAMMA partner Grass Valley.
The migration process at WPVI-TV started October of 2007 and is expected to be completed in early 2008. When the work is finished at WPVI, the SAMMA-Grass Valley team will move to the next ABC O&O station to continue the project. The intention is to do each station sequentially until migration is complete at all or most O&O stations in the group.
“After about 20 years, the tape medium starts to deteriorate. By 30 years, the reels of content can become unplayable. Unlike paper documents or movie film, videotape playback is inextricably linked to specific hardware.”
